Job Summary

Reporting to the Telescope Department Manager, the Optics Group Leader will lead the design, fabrication, integration and testing of the telescope optics for the Thirty Meter Telescope, including the segmented primary mirror, the secondary and tertiary mirrors, and their associated equipment.

Job Duties

The Optics Group Leader will lead a group responsible to:
  • Design and implement the segment support systems
  • Develop cost effective methods to manufacture 574 1.44-meter aspheric segments
  • Develop durable, high-reflectivity optical coatings
  • Design and implement the tooling and fixturing for assembling, installing, aligning, testing, removing, and recoating of segments
  • Design and implement the secondary mirror assembly, including the mirror and its support, positioning and thermal control systems
  • Design and implement all tooling and fixturing for assembling, installing, aligning and removing the secondary mirror assembly, and recoating the secondary mirror
  • Design and implement the tertiary mirror assembly, including the mirror and its support, positioning and thermal control systems
  • Design and implement all tooling and fixturing for assembling, installing, aligning and removing the tertiary mirror assembly, and recoating the tertiary mirror
  • Design and implement in-situ mirror cleaning equipment
  • Transport all telescope optical assemblies and equipment to the observatory site
  • Assemble, integrate and test all telescope optical assemblies in the observatory
  • Develop and present design documentation at design reviews

The Optics Group Leader will be responsible for planning and control of Optics Group activities, including creation and control of project plans, schedules, and cost estimates.

The Optics Group Leader will be responsible for systems engineering of the telescope optics, and will work with the project Systems Engineering Group to:
  • Prepare top-down and bottom-up error budgets
  • Set reliability engineering standards
  • Develop a quality assurance plan
  • Develop integration and test plans
  • Develop design requirements documents and interface control documents for the telescope optics

The Optics Group Leader will be responsible for selecting vendors and suppliers for approximately $100 million in contracts, and for providing technical administration of those contracts.

Minimum Requirements

10-year experience in the design of complex scientific detector, telescope or aerospace systems with significant experience in mechanical, optical and controls technology.

Experience leading a team in these activities is required. An advanced degree in related engineering is preferred. Experience in large projects is strongly preferred. Experience in placing and managing large contracts is strongly preferred.

The project office will be located in Monrovia. Some travel will be required to partner, vendor and observatory locations.
