Job Summary

The Senior Optomechanical Engineer reports to the TMT Telescope Optics Group Leader and will be responsible for managing one or more of the design and development subcontracts and partner work packages that will provide optical subsystems for the TMT project. The 492 plus 82 spare M1 segments are being fabricated by TMT partner suppliers in the U.S., Japan, India and China. The M2 optic fabrication will be a worldwide competitive procurement, the M3 optic is being supplied as a partner contribution from China and coating systems are being supplied as partner contributions from India. The Senior Engineer must have excellent technical, project management, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment. The primary work location for the Senior Engineer will initially be at the TMT Project office in Pasadena, CA, and a significant amount of international and domestic travel will be required.

Job Duties
 
The Senior Optomechanical Engineer will be responsible for guiding and evaluating the final design, fabrication, testing, transport, installation and testing of telescope optics group deliverables. Job duties will include: 
  • Developing statements of work and associated budgets, overseeing the technical work and managing work scope, cost and progress by contractors
  • Developing and ensuring conformance to requirements, specifications and interfaces
  • Working with the TMT international partner organizations in Canada, China, India, Japan and the United States
  • Facilitating communications and work flow between the Project Office, partner institutions and contractors to develop and ensure conformance to requirements
  • Developing and executing risk mitigation plans and safety plans
  • Independent verification of contractor designs and analyses as required
  • Presenting status reports and presentations to project management
  • Assisting in organizing and conducting review meetings
  • Working with the TMT Compliance Officer to assure that safety and environmental standards are met
  • Developing CAD models, one-line diagrams, interface drawings and presentations used to communicate with the contractors and project staff
  • Representing TMT through involvement with professional organizations and presentations to international conferences.
 
Minimum Requirements

 
  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or optics is required; an advanced degree in engineering is highly preferred
  • 8 years’ experience in the design, fabrication, installation and alignment of optics, complex machines or active structures in a multidiscipline team environment
  • Experience formulating and managing subcontracts in a cost constrained environment performing design, analyses, fabrication and testing work
  • Experience in performing the design, fabrication, installation and commissioning in a multi­discipline team environment
  • Experience in developing and managing work plans, schedules and budgets for purchased subsystems and engineering services
  • Experience developing and managing systems requirements and interface control documents
  • CAD experience in creating and updating 3D models; familiarity with SolidWorks is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The Senior Engineer must have strong technical skills in many of the following areas: 
  • Opto-Mechanical design and understanding of kinematic principles
  • Proven leadership ability
  • Understanding of manufacturing and assembly techniques
  • Analytical approach to problem solving
  • Understanding of geometric optics
  • Knowledge of structural mechanics and engineering materials
  • Experience using Geometrical Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5
  • Knowledge of large-optics fabrication and testing methods
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical documents to communicate internally and with partners and contractors
  • Developing and managing to a schedule and budget
  • Experience in technical contract management
 
Experience and skills that would also be valuable include all of the following: 
  • Knowledge of optical surveying techniques, i.e., photogrammetry, laser tracker measurement, etc.
  • Knowledge of formal systems engineering practices
  • Working knowledge of controls systems
  • Experience performing finite element analysis; experience with ANSYS is preferred
  • Experience working on large scientific or international projects
  • Experience with large astronomical observatories
  • Experience in developing bid packages and selecting contractors for major procurements
  • Knowledge of earned-value reporting
  • Product Assurance and Quality Assurance knowledge
  • Experience with FMEA
  • Fluency with Japanese, Chinese, or Hindi is a positive factor
