Paint Prep Technician III

Position Summary 

Under direct supervision, the Paint Prep Technician III will carry out paint preparation work to the absolute highest standards on our Singer luxury vehicles. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, filing, grinding, masking, prepping, sanding to precise standards, applying primer, paint application, conducting quality assurance inspections and revisions prior to our advanced paint application process in a manner that demonstrates, “Everything is Important.” 

Essential Functions 

  • Cleans and inspects vehicles for any flaws or imperfections prior to painting 

  • Preps vehicles for paint application and ensures quality assurance to precise company standards 

  • Properly fills depressions with body filler and ensures a quality repair 

  • Carefully and accurately masks any areas that are not meant to be painted 

  • Provides feedback to Production Supervisor on performance and growth of each team member 

  • May provide technical leadership, lead teams on assignments, check quality and quality of work, troubleshoot Bodywork & Paint problems, and recommend solutions 

  • Trains new/lower grade technicians on processes and procedures 

  • Performs Quality self-checks on tasks 

  • Works with Lead and Production Supervisor to ensure production demands meets the specified production schedule 

  • Works daily tasks lists set out by Lead/Production Supervisor 

  • Reports daily vehicle build status to Lead/Production Supervisor 

  • Performs operational procedure according to required engineering specifications 

  • Ensures workflow is tracked and on time through daily meetings  

  • Reports any issues, delays, and all non-conformances in production line to Lead and ensure correction in a timely manner to Lead/Production Supervisor 

  • Reports any material shortage/part defect to Lead/Production Supervisor 

  • Uses hammers/dollies to fix minor metalwork 

  • Files, grinds, and sands repaired surfaces using power tools and hand tools 

  • Replaces bolts on panels and aligns properly 

  • Maintains proper care and organization of tools and equipment for minimum painting downtime 

  • Follows proper operating rules, procedures, and standardized workflow 

  • Partners and provides clear communication with other team members and departments involved in the vehicle reconditioning process 

  • Maintains a clean and productive work environment by keeping tools and supplies organized throughout the Paint Department 

  • Ensures all environmental permit conditions, tracking data and hazardous waste is handled according to regulations and company policy 

  • Works in a cross-functional team environment as a strong team player and demonstrates the ability to work with other functional groups to achieve company-wide goals 

  • Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work environment  

  • Assists other team members as necessary 

  • Performs all other duties as assigned 

Qualifications: 

Required Education/Experience 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in paint preparation for high-end luxury automobiles, hot rods, or restoration shops 

Preferred Education/Experience and/or Certifications 

  • Familiarity with preparing Porsche 911s for paint 

  • Familiarity with preparation for PPG, AkzoNobel coatings and Sikkens Autowave®  

  • Relevant automotive paint certifications  

  • Prior experience in rapid growth environment 

Skills/Abilities and Attributes 

  • Experience with painting and prepping custom or restored automobiles 

  • Experience using various hand and power tools and equipment 

  • Experience filing, sanding, and grinding different materials such as steel, carbon- fiber/composite and/or fiberglass to provide an impeccable surface in preparation for paint application on custom automobiles  

  • Must possesses high attention to detail, adhere to high standards, and work well in a dedicated team environment where, “Everything is Important” 

  • Experience prepping and painting different materials including steel, and composites 

  • Ability to perform quality assurance to precise company standards 

  • Must possess a growth mindset approach to learning and be able to accept constructive feedback 

  • Effective written and verbal communications skills; ability to express ideas clearly and actively listen to others 

  • Team oriented, with a strong ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment to multiple deadlines 

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize effectively and efficiently 

  • Excellent time management with an ability to balance multiple projects and timelines and to meet deadlines 

  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic 

Physical Demands/Work Environment 

  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods 

  • Must be able to bend, stretch, push, pull and move with up to 50 lbs. of force 

  • Must have high visual acuity to discern the smallest surface imperfections 

  • Must be able to continuously perform repetitive tasks; possess manual dexterity 

  • Must be able to inspect automotive parts, before and after paint coats to identify any flaws 

  • Must be able to work extended hours or overtime as needed 

  • Must be able to wear and properly use required PPE in the production environment 

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 5:00 am - 1:30 pm with overtime as needed.
Compensation
The starting pay range for this position is between $23.00 - $28.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined by skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
