San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) envisions a future where health justice is achieved for all people living with or at risk for HIV. Position Overview:

The Stonewall Project Counselor I/II Bilingual provides culturally conscious individual and group counseling using a harm reduction framework, and in support of participants who wish to explore their use of alcohol and/or other substances (including people who inject drugs).  Ideal candidate has a deep understanding of harm reduction, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and other evidence-based behavioral, sexual, and mental health interventions. Must have a demonstrated commitment to race equity and health justice, and be able to articulate how these principles are woven into their practices and approach to serving SFAF’s prioritized communities including Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQI+ folks, people who use/inject drugs, people experiencing homelessness, and people living with or at risk of HIV and/or Hepatitis C. 

Fluency and ability to provide counseling services in two or more languages required. 
CA State Registration as an Associate Social Worker, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist, Associate Professional Clinical Counselor OR are a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor is required.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 
  • Individual Counseling: Provide individual integrated substance use and mental health counseling and treatment to walk-in and enrolled participants. Conduct intake, assessment, and treatment planning including substance use, mental health, HIV, HCV and other physical health concerns. Provide provisional DSM diagnosis, crisis intervention and case management as needed.
  • Group Counseling: Facilitate counseling, education, social, and process groups, including groups that offer low-threshold walk-in services to participants who may be actively using. Develop, maintain and/or write group curriculums. Maintain group materials including those used for outreach. Coordinate & conduct recruitment & retention of target populations.    
  • Race Equity and Health Justice: In accordance with organization strategic plan and programmatic objectives, work to center prioritized communities, with an emphasis on race equity and health justice in all aspects of service provision and staff capacity building. 
  • Workshops / Events: Coordinate, plan, develop, facilitate social events, workshops and/or time limited groups or special projects as assigned.
  • Outreach:  Collaborate with internal and external providers (counselors, case managers and medical providers, etc.) to achieve common goals of our mission statement related to outreach, harm reduction trainings, and other events as assigned.  
  • Administrative: Maintain all records and paperwork in a timely manner and in compliance with guidelines established by the program and all funding and licensing bodies.
  • Other duties as assigned: group room setup and tear down, light beverage and snack service, etc.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of the harm reduction model, motivational interviewing, drug and alcohol counseling, safer injection techniques and practice, overdose prevention, and other therapeutic models and interventions.
  • Ability to work comfortably with diverse populations of drug and/or alcohol users – including injection & non-injection drug users.
  • Awareness around intersectional identities, and how racial discrimination and white supremacy create inequities in health outcomes, allocation of resources, and access to care.
  • Fluency in issues concerning substance use, injection drug use, disability, HIV/HCV infection and transmission, trauma, alcohol use, homelessness, queer night life, party and play scenes, sex and sexuality.
  • Understanding of HIV treatment, prevention and transmission risk factors and opportunities including the use of biomedical interventions (I.e. PREP). 
  • CA State Registration as an Associate Social Worker, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist, Associate Professional Clinical Counselor OR are a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor.

Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
Skill in operating equipment such as a personal computer, copy machine and telephone system.  Ability to perform routine bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Education and Experience
 
  • California state registration as a Social Worker, Marriage & Family Therapist, Professional Counselor or Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor required.  
  • 2 to 4 years of counseling experience, providing individual and group counseling.
  • Experience with substance use, mental health, injection drug use, and/or HIV/HCV counseling preferred.
  • Experience working with historically marginalized populations.
  • Experience working in low threshold walk-in centers or milieu-based community mental health settings strongly preferred.

This position will have access to protected health information (PHI) and may only access, use or disclose the minimum information necessary to perform their designated role on behalf of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, regardless of the extent of access provided.

Work Environment:

This position is located primarily at either our  940 Howard Street location or at our 470 Castro Street location as assigned but will also work as needed at 117 6th Street. This position includes working standard program evening hours, which are 7:30 – 8 pm., &/or occasionally later as required by the program.  The position may require traveling to other office locations and/or off-site meetings or trainings. This position will include working weekend hours.

Work Hours: This position may be required to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule. 
Work includes weekends, holidays and evenings, as assigned. Must be willing and able to work M-F evenings and Saturday daytime hours.
