POSITION TITLE:               Peer Mentor
STATUS:                             Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT:                   Behavioral Health


This position has a starting pay of $19.50 per hour with a 40 hour work week.  

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB:  The Peer Mentor will provide immediate supervision and support to the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) Interns and provide input and feedback to the Program Manager about all Peer Support Specialists working at the Wellness and Advocacy Center (Center) to maintain consistency and the highest level of service to Center members. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate on-going training with constructive feedback are essential in this position. Collecting information and presenting written analysis of the individual Interns progress is required.

PROVIDES SUPERVISION TO:   Peer Support Specialist Interns

RESPONSIBILITIES - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Recruit and interview PSS Intern applicants for open positions and present recommendations to the Program Manager
  • Exceptional knowledge and understanding of Peer Support and the history of Peer Support
  • Provide structure, mentorship, instruction and support to PSS Interns
  • Represent the Center and Goodwill - Redwood Empire in the community as required with community and peer groups
  • Maintain strong Center communication through regular participation in staff meetings and other opportunities to grow understanding and solution-oriented thinking
  • Administer periodic satisfaction surveys with members to determine satisfaction with Peer Support Specialist Interns; report on findings and make recommendations to the Program Manager for needed actions or changes
  • Facilitate regular training for the Interns and Center team in the area of peer support
  • Develop and deliver a monthly progress report on each Intern for the Program Manager
  • Participate in the facilitation of staff meetings and the planning and facilitation of staff retreats as requested by the Program Manager
  • Attendance at work is an essential job function.  Regular interaction with PSS Interns and other managers and staff is expected
  • Regular on-site attendance is required due to the interactive requirements of the position
ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide tours of Wellness and Advocacy Center for community members, providers, and other interested parties
  • Support members directly through peer support, group facilitation, and resource referral
  • Facilitate Wellness and Advocacy Center community meetings as needed
  • Support and adhere to Goodwill - Redwood Empire and Center policies and procedures
  • Provide support to any position in the Center as needed to accomplish goals
  • Attend monthly safety meetings and schedule Interns to attend
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned by Program Manager
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Self-identification as a mental health services consumer
  • Comprehensive training on Peer Support techniques (with instructor recommendation), and 2+ year experience as a Peer Support Specialist  or in a similar mental health or related field position
  • In-depth self-recovery work and (if applicable) abstinence from substance abuse
  • Interpersonal flexibility and excellent social skills
  • Dedication to preserving and advancing the rights and abilities of persons with lived mental health experience
  • Willingness to accept supervision, training, and a continual learning process
  • Ongoing commitment to own mental health recovery and personal growth
  • Computer and Internet literacy (working knowledge of MS Office suite preferred)
  • Active contribution to a warm friendly and positive environment
  • Communicate effectively in person, on the phone, and via email
  • Work consistently as a participating team member
  • Knowledge of the peer self-help movement
  • Knowledge of the purpose, population and mission of the Wellness and Advocacy Center
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Clean office environment, temperate climate, overhead lighting, and low to moderate noise level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to stand/sit for periods of time, intermittently throughout the day.  Able to perform repetitive finger-movements and grasping needed for computer work.  Capable of bending/stooping/walking and light lifting.
