Working with the Design and Sales teams, Industrial Designer provides technical design expertise, production consulting, specifications development, manufacturing and sourcing research, and customer solution engineering under guidance of the Senior Engineering team. 

This is a 12-month contract with possibility for extension. 



Technical Design Expertise:

  • Develop engineering strategies to improve overall design performance within the design team
  • Implement methods to improve transition of product from concept through to engineered details
  • Create product specific standards that minimize potential failures through the design and production process and entire lifecycle of the product

Technical Consultant:

  • Act as an internal technical design consultant to all members of the permanent and overall design team as required
  • Partner with sales, providing technical design expertise and input directly to existing and potential clients through the product development cycle

Specifications Development

  • Develop best in class specifications for all designed components for any outsourced or insourced design solutions
  • Train and maintains and audits all specifications standards and ensure compliance
  • Seek methods to improve the speed and accuracy of specification development

Manufacturing and Sourcing

  • Research new manufacturing methods to be utilized within business units and conducts feasibility for inclusion
  • Collaborate with internal business units to develop, source and document new vendor partners capabilities and opportunities both locally and globally
  • Ensure vendor protocols are maintained by working with quality management group

Customer Solution

  • Work collaboratively with other design team members to ensure a complete engineering solution is developed within deadlines and budget defined by the customer
  • Assist in sourcing, estimating, retail instruction sheets and project management activity as defined by the project parameters and by the project team
  • Assist in the development of specifications for estimating, prototyping and production estimating
  • Coordinate and/or manage the prototype process as per workload

Quality and Performance:

  • Proactively minimize potential failures prior to development and execution of product through the design process with quality team
  • Ensure that the final product meets or exceeds the performance criteria as set by the customer and or client

Product Development:

  • Adapt new materials made available to the design team into relevant product offers
  • Participate in the innovation team to provide mentorship, evaluation and guidance on new product concepts
  • Educate design and sales teams on new product development opportunities as well as on going technical design enhancements to existing products


  • Provide frequent updates to manager on progress on projects, challenges and wins
  • Report to the sales team through the sales meeting venue on any relevant information in the aforementioned areas which may serve to educate or provide a strategic advantage to a potential client or new customer opportunity
  • Maintain time allotment on all design activities through internal workflow management system


  • University degree or college diploma in Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Minimum 2-3 years design development experience is required in an emphasis on technical solutions
  • Experience working in a technical development role at custom fabricator, marketing at retail firm or engineering company
  • Broad knowledge of all production processes including:
  • Metal fabrication
  • Plastics manufacturing and processing
  • Corrugated manufacturing and conversion
  • Wood Fabrication
  • Lighting and interactive componentry


  • Microsoft Office
  • Current Solidworks versions CAD software
  • Relationship and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Organizational and time management
  • Financially savvy with understanding of overall product and service offering of employer
  • Self-motivated with high energy, ability to multi-task and execute multiple projects on time
  • Willing and able to take the initiative in uncovering and implementing business building ideas
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Positive team player who can work effectively with internal and external stakeholders
