Position Overview

Are you a hands-on, results-driven and collaborative operations professional?  Do you have broad transportation, logistics or waste management expertise? You’ll work closely with our Operations Director, Route Supervisors and Collections team to coordinate daily collections of food scraps for recycling, manage special projects, and achieve goals for safety, customer service and profitability.

You’ll support our Route Supervisors to maintain high performance levels for our fleet of trucks and our team of Drivers (CDL and non-CDL) and Driver Helpers. You’ll ensure that all collection routes are completed as scheduled to meet the highest standards of safety, customer service, efficiency and fleet maintenance. Your typical work day will start at 4 am Monday to Friday with a rotating weekend on-call schedule. With flexibility and teamwork, you’ll enjoy a satisfying work/life balance. 

Responsibilities
 

  • Under Operations Director guidance, support Collections Operations facilities within 3 different locations (Upper Marlboro, Rockville and DC)

  • Be a key player in the implementation of new contracts and operational plans

  • Assists in ensuring compliance within regulatory agencies at each location (DOT, OSHA, EPA)

  • Lead by example; provide support with continuous training at each facility with Route Supervisors

  • Collaborate in implementing procedures related to service, safety and environmental compliance

  • Support recruitment and training of Drivers and Helpers

  • Support the customer service team and attend to priority customer service issues

  • Support management of offices and yards to keep the spaces safe, secure, organized and clean

  • Collaborate with other departments such as sales, customer service, dispatch and post collections to ensure business and operational goals are met

  • Help ensure trucks are maintained to standard

  • Maintain inventory and storage in addition to occasionally transporting supplies and vehicles 

  • Occasionally fill in for Drivers or crew Helpers as needed

  • Occasionally fill in for Route Supervisors during scheduled time off periods under Operations Director guidance 
     

Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • At least five  years experience in transportation, logistics, or waste management operations 

  • At least two years experience with responsibility for commercial driver supervision, training, coaching and performance assessment

  • Driving record that meets Compost Crew standards

  • Safety-first/Quality-first leadership skills

  • Capacity to lead diverse teams of individuals to perform at their best

  • Customer service/Communication/Collaboration skills

  • Driver recruitment and training skills

  • Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to communicate and troubleshoot truck maintenance issues/Enforce fleet maintenance programs

  • A high degree of ethics and integrity to always do the right thing

  • Ability to problem-solve, use good judgment and make sound decisions efficiently

  • Schedule flexibility in meeting operational needs

  • Intermediate skills in MS Office or Google Workspace applications

  • Ability to learn, configure and implement computer applications and systems

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner as well as skillfully gather and analyze information

  • Clear and persuasive communication skills in one-on-one, team and group settings

  • Meeting management skills including presentation and meeting leadership skills group presentation skills, and conduct productive meetings

  • Willingness to explore ways to improve and promote quality; demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness; and maintain compliance with internal and external requirements

  • Observe safety and security procedures, and use equipment and materials properly.

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced setting
