HVAC Installer / Mechanic (Experienced)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Range:  $24-$40 / hr, depending on experience

POSITION SUMMARY
Tactical Construction, Inc. is seeking a highly skilled and experienced HVAC Installer/Mechanic to join our growing team. This role is responsible for the advanced installation, troubleshooting, commissioning, and repair of HVAC systems in residential and commercial environments. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, leadership capability in the field, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

This position serves as a technical leader on job sites, supporting apprentices and junior installers while collaborating closely with project managers, contractors, and customers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The HVAC Installer/Mechanic is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
  • Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems, including rooftop units, split systems, VRF/VRV systems, boilers, furnaces, and air handlers
  • Install and fabricate sheet metal ductwork, including complex layouts and field modifications
  • Install and service refrigeration piping, gas piping, hydronic systems, and piping
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot various HVAC related equip
  • Read, interpret, and execute work from blueprints, schematics, specifications, and mechanical schedules
  • Ensure systems are installed to code, manufacturer specifications, and company quality standards
  • Perform system startups, testing, balancing coordination, and commissioning
  • Install and troubleshoot electrical wiring, controls, thermostats, VFDs, and control interfaces
  • Lead and support less-experienced installers; provide on-the-job training and mentorship
  • Coordinate with project managers, subcontractors, inspectors, and other trades
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, materials used, and deficiencies identified
  • Utilize Procore and other project management tools for daily reporting and documentation
  • Uphold all safety standards, OSHA regulations, and company safety policies at all times
  • Representing Tactical Construction professionally when interacting with customers and partners
  • Stay current with HVAC technologies, codes, and best practices through continued education

REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent (technical or trade school preferred)
  • 3+ years of hands-on HVAC installation and service experience
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical codes, building codes, and OSHA regulations
  • OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 preferred
  • EPA Universal Certification required
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation
  • Acceptable driving record per company insurance requirements
  • Ability to work in varied weather conditions and construction environments
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and diagnostic equipment
  • Experience operating lifts and equipment (forklift, scissor lift, boom lift, lull preferred but not necessary)
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
  • Experience using Procore or similar construction management software preferred, but able to learn
  • Ability to represent the company with professionalism and integrity

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires the ability to:
  • Lift and carry heavy HVAC materials and equipment, individually and as a team
  • Perform prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying environmental conditions
  • Safely operate hand and power tools
  • Maintain balance and coordination in dynamic construction environments

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor construction environments
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, weather elements, and hazardous equipment
  • Regular use of PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe footwear
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, insulation materials, and solvents

WORK SCHEDULE
Company operating hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm.
Full-time employees are expected to work 40 hours per week. Overtime may be required as approved by management. Meal breaks are provided in accordance with New York State law.


TRAVEL
Daily travel to jobsites, primarily within the Greater Rochester area. Occasional travel outside the region may be required based on project needs. Reliable transportation is required.
