Sharing a direct heritage with previous generations of the world’s largest telescopes, the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will be the largest in the Northern Hemisphere and the largest telescope in the public U.S. system of professional telescopes.  Astronomers throughout the U.S. and the world will harness TMTʻs power to explore the mysterious dark matter and energy that dominate our universe, reveal the processes of star, planet, and galaxy formation, and search for — and quite possibly detect — signs of life on extrasolar planets.

Bringing a revolution in science and technology, TMT is also changing the way we do astronomy on this planet.  It has integrated the concept of community astronomy into its core and is leading the field in ensuring broad access to the benefits of astronomy exploration, paying particular attention to groups that have too often been marginalized and overlooked in the past.  TMT staff are engaged with their local communities and the TMT organization supports community-led initiatives to make the world a better place for ourselves and our children.

TMT is an international collaboration consisting of the University of California, the California Institute of Technology, Canada, Japan, and India, and is part of the United States Extremely Large Telescope Program to coordinate U.S. access to both U.S. federally-funded extremely large telescopes.

TMT is well into its build phase and is scheduled for the start of scientific nighttime operations in the mid-2030s.  TMT has project offices in both Pasadena, California and Hilo, Hawaiʻi, USA. The design and build of the various telescope systems is distributed across the TMT partner institutions, collaborators, industry, and TMT staff.  The project is working with local consortia in Hawaiʻi to bring more development and integration to the local area and train and inspire a local workforce.  Whether new to Hawaiʻi or already a local, TMT encourages staff to become a part of the community and support it with both volunteer and company-provided time.

TMT offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including impressive retirement plans. If you are interested in applying for employment with TMT, please apply online.

TMT is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
